Can you believe our Warm Room has been going for a year and a half? I can’t! What a wonderful success it has been. We opened our doors in faith and God has supplied our needs. From a bare hall it has been transformed into a comfortable, cosy space, now well used and enjoyed by so many people from the community. We searched out comfortable chairs, sofas and cushions (thank you to everyone who gave) and other items appeared, most recently a music centre with CD’s.

The Warm Room is open Mondays and Fridays from 11am to 2pm and there is always tea, coffee and baking available, with soup and rolls at lunchtime. We got an old fridge and freezer and set up some tables in the corner for serving and we were off! We bought a lovely bright banner to display at Sandbraes, Brian made notice boards, we put up posters, set up a Facebook page (Whiting Bay and Kildonan Church Warm Room) and advertised it on social media. The many visitors seem to appreciate being there and Mhairi Hackett suggested that Parents and Toddlers would like a day of their own. And so the Warm Room is open to a playgroup on Wednesdays also. People of all ages - and their well behaved dogs - come along, some to stay all day, some to pop in for a short time. The Church of Scotland gave us £500 to get started and the Co-op provided a gift card for £100 to buy essential food. We have applied for other grants, to CalMac’s Community Fund and North Ayrshire’s Participatory Grant Fund.

We were successful in our application for the Co-op Crowdfunder, in which the Co-op match funds all donations up to £250. Other grants have been secured, to improve the toilet area and to provide a ramp, both of which are necessary for disabled access. A local electrician installed a new fuse box and several sockets, and people from outwith the church in Whiting Bay have been very generous with money and gifts.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers who bake, make soup and serve others. If you haven’t been, please come along and enjoy great company and good food!
